Robert turns 73 in a few years and we want to understand our required minimum distribution strategy. Would it make sense to start taking distributions earlier to smooth out the tax hit, rather than waiting until we have to?

We would like to increase the monthly distribution from the joint account from $6,500 to $8,000, starting in October. Linda is cutting back to part-time and we want the extra cushion.
